Well I’m calling it, Mezcal Kitchen is now my new favorite place for Tacos in Bayonne, NJ. This restaurant located on Broadway (the main street in Bayonne) uses fresh and authentic ingredients. I visited this spot on a Monday around 3 pm in the middle of the day, obviously not a busy time. The restaurant is a great space, it features some fantastic decor right down to the woodwork for the tables, bar, and even chairs; all marked with the “Mezcal” Kitchen lettering. The wood paneling on the walls feature traditional Mexican artwork of skulls and skeletons. Colorful banners adorn the ceiling and complement the many sombreros along the walls. While I didn’t dine at the bar, I did see one patron enjoying a large margarita…I’ll be back for that shortly.

I crown Mezcal Kitchen with the best tacos in Bayonne, NJ as of 10/29/18. I usually try and stick with carnitas in town, it’s sort of like a control test, often carnitas tend to taste too dry and for me that’s where my ratings fall low.

The carnitas tacos at Mezcal are served on double corn tortillas in an order of three. These tortillas are small and cooked well. The pork used for the carnitas could best be described as fluffy and cooked with a crunch on the outside giving them a great first bite & an interesting texture. I really enjoyed the shredded fresh radishes, cilantro, and diced yellow onion. Make sure to use the provided lime on each taco, the lime goes well with the saltiness of the carnitas. Make sure to use the two sauces provided; a green sauce with a pretty good mild profile and a darker (HOTTER) reddish brown sauce (appears to be made with a tamarillo base) If you need to cleanse your palate from each sauce before biting in, the slices of cucumber with each taco do the trick.
