First, let’s start with the awesome location in the Flatiron District. If the location and neon “BAR” sign out front looks familiar it was once Live Bait, a spot for oysters and happy hour. Upon walking in you’ll find some neon lights, a long bar, and a back area with booths and tables. Some of the original decor from Live Bait still lives here, like the taxidermy Mahi-mahi on the wall.
It’s quite a lively spot on a Friday night, at 7 PM getting a table for two people was not a problem without any wait time. There’s definitely great food and atmosphere here, but the music can be a little loud, so if it’s a first date or you’re trying to have a conversation, take that into account. We enjoyed ourselves here at Flats Fix, margaritas were very good and service from both the bar and kitchen were fast. There is an interesting array of taco options here, from crispy Long Island duck to a smoked pastrami taco. The menu was priced just right, 3 tacos (mix and match style) came with rice and beans for $13.75.
I started out with the classic carnitas, well seasoned pork on a nicely cooked tortilla hit the spot. The carnitas like most of the tacos are topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, and diced green bell pepper. The fresh ingredients set this taco apart from the competition, also there’s a good balance of flavor and heat. If you’re wondering whats on top of the carnitas taco, its crispy comotes (shredded sweet potato).
Next up we tried the smoked pulled chicken and damn what do you know? The smoked pulled chicken taco at Flats Fix was also amazing. Start with another great corn tortilla, tender meat, that fresh pico de gallo, and guacamole. The taco was topped with a great smokey mole poblano sauce, queso fresco, and drizzled with crema. This combination brought a lot of flavor and heat to this taco. I really recommend the smoked pulled chicken taco if you love a good balance of flavor and heat that compliment each other.
Onto the brisket taco, I’ve always been a fan of barbecue style brisket, so I was easily sold. First bite into this taco and it’s quite literally dripping with flavor, tender meat, fresh ingredients, and a great kick of heat bring it all together. My top pick is for the brisket with the smoked chicken for a close second.
