A three dollar ferry ride from downtown New York City will take you over to Governor’s Island, a historic Island with plenty of events and activities through out the summer (my favorite is the 1920’s Jazz Age Lawn Party). As you get off the ferry make the first left for some views of the Manhattan skyline and some tacos. Taco Vista is a cool spot with picnic tables, umbrellas, and string lights lighting up the patio at night. Grab some of the tacos from the converted shipping container and enjoy some drinks with good company.
How’s the tacos?
Well unfortunately the views are better than the tacos and you might like the instagram-able photo opportunities here more. I can see this location as a great spot for a social gathering with friends for drinks after a day on the island, There are four taco options here: carnitas & jalapeño, grilled chicken, veggie (mushroom) option and a shasmi tuna taco. I ordered the carnitas & jalapeño taco and a frozen margarita.

The carnitas are served on a corn tortilla, but they were not homemade. The meat was good, but I really didn’t get a lot of flavor here or spice, and nothing about it tasted like jalapeño, it was bland for my palette. The carnitas taco was topped with diced red onion, cilantro, diced tomato, sour cream and what I believed to be pickled onion. The taco spot here on Governor’s Island is more of a last resort for me, I was here for one of their late night Fridays, and the food trucks were unavailable. They went for a gourmet/authentic style taco but unfortunately, they missed the mark on both. And for a vegetarian option, a cactus taco should have been available. There wasn’t anything truly memorable or special about these tacos, and sadly, I left disappointed. Taco Vista on Governor’s Island was ok, just not great, I’d say grab one if you’re hungry but don’t expect to be blown away if you eat tacos on the regular like ya boy. I must add that the margaritas were as good as the view and the staff was extremely friendly, this is a great drink spot, not a great taco spot.
